WARM UPS - AN ESSENTIAL TEACHING TOOL by Moqheeta Mehboob
WARM UP ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS
I thoroughly enjoy the time spent with teachers during training sessions. It's not just about sharing new information and strategies; I also learn a great deal from the teachers themselves. In a recent session on lesson planning with a group of particularly engaging teachers, I found the discussions to be both enriching and inspiring.
During this session, I highlighted the significance of incorporating warm-ups into every class period. Warm-ups play a crucial role in creating a positive and effective learning environment, and the teachers responded enthusiastically to this idea. I thought it would be valuable to share this with you all—because the more people benefit, the better!
During a session on the components of lesson planning, I emphasized the importance of incorporating warm-ups into every class period. Warm-ups are vital for creating a positive and effective learning environment, and the teachers responded very positively to this part of the lesson plan. I thought it would be beneficial to share this with all of you—after all, the greater the benefit, the better!
We discussed what a warm-up is in a classroom context, who should conduct it, when it should be done, why it’s important, and how it should be carried out. Here are the key points we covered:
1. Building Healthy Rapport Between Teacher and Student:
Warm-ups create an informal and relaxed atmosphere where teachers and students can interact more personally. This helps break down barriers, fostering trust and respect, which are essential for a strong teacher-student relationship.
2. Easing Tension in the Classroom:
A well-chosen warm-up can ease any tension in the classroom, making students more open and receptive to learning, especially before tackling difficult subjects or tests.
3. Lightening Students' Mood:
Fun and engaging warm-up activities can lift students' spirits, making them more enthusiastic about participating in the lesson.
4. Engaging Everyone:
Warm-ups involve all students, ensuring inclusivity and building a sense of community in the classroom.
5. Preparing Students for the Next Lesson:
Warm-ups serve as a bridge between past and upcoming lessons, helping students mentally prepare for new material.
6. Adding Fun to the Classroom:
Incorporating fun into learning through warm-ups can boost motivation, encourage creativity, and make the learning experience more enjoyable.
7. Checking Students' Knowledge:
Warm-ups can act as a quick assessment tool, helping teachers gauge students' understanding and identify any knowledge gaps.
In our session, we practiced several warm-up activities, and some teachers shared their own ideas. One teacher suggested using the game "Simon Says" tailored to classroom tasks, like “Simon says, take out your book” or “Simon says, open page 55.” Here are a couple more warm-up ideas you can use:
Quick Word Association: Have students quickly associate words related to the lesson topic.
Memory Chain: Start with a simple sentence (e.g., "I went to the market and bought an apple"). Each student adds another item to the list, repeating everything that was said before. This activity sharpens memory and attention.
Make warm-ups a regular part of your teaching routine. They not only ease your workload but also greatly benefit the students. If you need workshops on any aspect of classroom practices, feel free to contact EDUTOP.
